An element with no meaning of its own becomes a concept through repetition.

Mahmoud Mahmoudi is one of the most remarkable Iranian abstract contemporary artists. He was curious about nature from his first days of life — playing with rocks and clumps of soil was his favourite childhood hobby.

His studio looks out over the mountains, inspiring him with every morning's first light. His professional work began in 1999, at nineteen. Enlightened by nature and thinking abstractly, he sees no separation between forms and concepts.

Trained first in figurative art and sculpture, over time he developed a real passion for abstraction built from lines and squares — simple subjects, endlessly repeated. He works across techniques but most often chooses mixed media; his recent works are three-dimensional, layering mixed media on canvas.

Repetition of a motif can create an infinite space — found in indigenous arts the world over. This repetition also lives in nature itself. Working with natural materials, the work takes shape the way nature grows. His paintings now belong to private collections and to public museums alike.
